What is Nippon Jiu-Jitsu?

Jiu-Jutsu is considered to be the mother of the Japanese Martial Arts.
Jiu-Jutsu was not designed to be a sport; it was the physical application of Bushido the martial way of service to the warlords of old. A rough-and-tumble method of close combat that included a variety of armed and unarmed techniques:
  • The hand strikes and kicks employed in modern karate,
  • Joint locks used in Aikido, and throws, take downs, and choke holds found in Judo.
  • JIU-JUTSU also included the use of weapons such as the stick (Bo), the knife (Tonto), and other common objects.
Jigoro Kano himself, taught my Sensei in Japan. Professor Kano was an expert in Kitoryo and Tenshishinyo Jiu-Jitsu, stressing throwing and atemi waza ryu. Professor Kano is credited with creating the Art of Judo nearly 100 years ago.

My Sensei was Professor Sanzo Seki (8th Dan in Jiu-Jitsu and US Champion for over 15 years, also a 4th Dan in Judo), himself a student of Professor Kano. He is a first generation, and I am a second generation student. In the early 1950's, Master Seki ( first Jiu-Jitsu master in the U.S.) brought Nippon Jiu-Jitsu to America, and founded the California Branch of the Jiu-Jitsu Federation.

Though Professor Seki retired in 1986 at the age of 70, we still remained in contact with each other until his death early in 1998. To honor our founder, the art was re-named "Seki Ryu Jiu Jitsu" This is what I teach in classes, Expos, Demos, and Camps throughout California and the U.S.

This is me, Linda M. Gross, Ichiban to Professor Seki. I have been studying Jiu-Jitsu for nearly 42 years and hold 10th Dan (Judan). I am an associate at the Karate Women's School in West Los Angeles, CA.
